Odoo marked its 20th anniversary this year, and the celebration kicked off in San Francisco at Odoo Experience Americas 2026, held September 2–3 at Pier 27 on the Embarcadero. The two-day event drew community members, partners, and developers from across the Americas for talks, masterclasses, and a look ahead at where the platform is heading next.
Two Decades, One Direction: More AI
The anniversary framing wasn't just ceremonial. Odoo's own session lineup in San Francisco included a dedicated technical talk, "What's New in the Odoo 20 Framework," walking attendees through the changes coming between Odoo 19.0 and 20.0: new extension points for custom modules, a redesigned security model, and smarter ways to query data without leaving the ORM.
For businesses that want to see where things are headed before committing to an upgrade, Odoo already makes a rolling Odoo 20 build available to test-drive directly on its site, a live, if unstable, preview environment where databases are reset weekly.
The Full Reveal Is Still Ahead
It's worth being precise about timing here: Odoo 20 has not been officially released yet. The full unveiling is scheduled for Odoo Experience 2026 in Brussels, September 24–26, at Brussels Expo, Odoo's flagship annual event and the traditional venue for major version launches.
That means the OXP Americas keynote functioned as a preview and a retrospective, not a launch. Odoo's own community groups framed the San Francisco event the same way: a chance for the Odoo ecosystem across the Americas to connect and get an early read on what's coming, ahead of the main event in Belgium two weeks later.
What This Means for Manufacturers on Odoo
Two practical takeaways, until version 20 is officially out:
- Don't plan a production upgrade around Odoo 20 timing yet. General availability for major Odoo versions has historically landed a few weeks after the Brussels reveal, and the first fully stable patch tends to follow after that. If you're mid-implementation, Odoo 19 remains the safe, mature choice for now.
- The framework changes are worth a look either way. Even if you're staying on your current version for a while, the security model and ORM changes flagged in Odoo's own framework session are the kind of under-the-hood shifts that affect custom modules and integrations down the line.
